Function & Wedding
Bands
Makfolk
With many years experience behind us firstly as a folk band in the mould
of The Corries, then as a Ceilidh band and now playing at weddings
and other functions, Makfolk truly are a Multi-function band. In our
folk days we played mostly in the North East (but broadcast live and
recorded on Northsound, Radio Scotland and Radio 2) and have also appeared
in HM Theatre and the Music Hall. Some of the ‘older’ folk
out there may know us from our Friday residencies first in the Abergeldie,
then the Bobbin Mill and latterly the Malt Mill.

These days gave
us a great sense of fun and contact with the audience, something which
we
try to keep going to this day. Ceilidhs especially give us the chance
to not only call all the dances, but when required we’ll get down on
the floor and get you organised and if all else fails demonstrate the dances
as well. This contact with the audience is key to what we do – we
entertain and try to ensure that the audience fully enjoy themselves. We
don’t take ourselves too seriously (one look at the ‘up tempo’ song
list will confirm that), but we do take what we do seriously. All arrangements
are handled professionally and we aim to have you ask us back again!
The band was formed at school in the early (very early) ‘70s by
Keith, and Peter had joined by 1971. Heavily influenced by The Corries,
the band (unchanged except for bass players) played the pub circuit in
and around Aberdeen until the mid ‘90s. Linda came on board and
persuaded the others to go along to Aberdeen Strathspey & Reel Society
(Keith and Peter are both fiddlers, as is Linda, and had played in the
National Youth String Orchestra of Scotland). This proved to be a turning
point and, along with new recruit Mike, the band won several competitions
both collectively and as individuals at Elgin, Banchory and Kirriemuir
Fiddle Festivals. It was a natural progression to move onto Ceilidh sets,
the first one being in Elphinstone Hall in 1995. Ceilidhs now form the
core of the band’s repertoire, with a unique sound – two
fiddles, guitar and bass. Retaining the Strathspey & Reel ‘feel’ also
gives the band an unusual style which is neither traditional Scottish
Dance band nor contemporary ‘Gaelic rock’. Mike’s arrival
provided the catalyst for the band doing Rock & Pop – something
Keith and Peter had always hankered after. Mike had played lead guitar
and bass in rock bands for many years, and with the addition of a little
electronic wizardry and four-part harmonies the picture was now complete.
Friends before and after joining in the band (we hope this shows in what
we d0), since performing their first Rock & Pop set in Lossiemouth
in 1999 the band have gone from strength to strength, and with the mix
of Folk, Ceilidh and Rock & Pop provide a unique and flexible evening’s
entertainment.
